This series is inspired by the concept of space medicine, aiming to create a healing space where the spiritual and the physical intertwine. Chengyu Yao hopes that when women enter this space and encounter these paintings, they can feel a deep sense of comfort and restoration.
Each piece is created through automatic drawing, a process in which Yao channels subconscious energy into visual form while in a meditative state. These images are infused with blessings and healing forces, and are redefined by the artist as “talismans”—a concept rooted in Taoist tradition, where such symbols are believed to ward off evil. Here, the talisman becomes a visual emblem of protection and empowerment.
These works serve not only as spiritual icons but also as vessels of energy. They respond to themes of trauma, memory, and rebirth, weaving spells of resistance and consolation through soft and intuitive brushstrokes.
